A patient with cystic fibrosis is prescribed pancreatin. The nurse explains to the patient that this medication:

•Pancreatin contains the pancreatic enzymes amylase, lipase, and protease. It is used to aid digestion for patients with cystic fibrosis.

•With cystic fibrosis, secretions become thick and sticky, including in the areas of the pancreas and GI tract. This blocks normal digestion and absorption of nutrients, so pancreatic enzymes are given to improve digestion.
