•The teaching plan should include measures for eliminating the infestation and preventing its spread. This is done by machine washing all clothing and linens in hot water for at least 30 minutes.
•Medicated shampoo is the preferred treatment. Examples include Nix and RID.
•Administering a topical anti-itch medication is not recommended.
•Calamine is a topical anti-itch medication. Burrow's solution is an antibacterial agent used for poison ivy and sumac. Neither are used in the treatment of head lice.
•Hair combing must be performed along with the medicated shampoo treatments using a nit comb (fine-toothed comb).
