Explanation
•On examination, the child’s pupil appears white (red reflex is absent) or is described as a “cat’s eye”.
•Retinoblastoma is a rare malignant tumor of the retina. It is usually diagnosed before the age of 5 and the cure rate is one of the highest among all childhood cancers.
•Strabismus occurs in 20% of children with retinoblastoma, compared to 56% for a white pupil.
•Blurred vision and headache are not associated with retinoblastoma.
