•Patients with sickle cell anemia should get adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration, especially in hot weather and during activity. Dehydration, infection, and acidosis can trigger a sickle cell crisis.
•The child needs adequate rest in order to reduce stress and illness.
•Children with sickle cell anemia need to be followed closely at regular health care visits. The parents should bring their child in at the first sign of infection to prevent complications.
•Children should attend regular school activities except contact sports which would result in rupture of an enlarged spleen.
